Bread for the Masses: Operation Sack Lunch
Had the chance to visit Operation Sack Lunch’s massive warehouse in Seattle’s SODO district. Organizations like OSL are more important than ever in a time when the federal government is actively trying to cut funding for meal programs.
OSL is rated a 4 star charity by Charity Navigator. Their administrative costs are barely 5% of their budget - unheard of among most nonprofits. The executive director’s $250,000 salary does raise some eyebrows.
In a better world we would not need charity because the government — funded by the rich — would spend money overseeing a sane, humane society where food banks and other signs of civilization’s decline would become unnecessary.
The Romans had bread and circuses to keep their impoverished population in line. In America in 2025 we have a high tech version of that, but now they are trying to take away the bread. We’ll see how that works out.
