Crab Stacking in Seattle
Nobody likes to see a tank full of dead Dungeness crabs but that’s what I encountered the other day at Lam’s Market in Seattle.
Selling live seafood from a tank can be problematic. I’m all for keeping bivalves like clams and oysters alive that way but crab stacking seems cruel.
You can get vibriosis from raw or undercooked shellfish but also if you poke yourself with a tilapia.
It’s not necessary to store bivalves in a tank and it might be safer to not do that. Uwajimaya does it with oysters and so did Mutual Fish.
