LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Federal food aid to the states is being cut off as of November 1st. Millions of families rely on this assistance. My family has resources and it’s still painful to shop for groceries - I can’t imagine how people without money are going to cope with this. When I left my job at the soup kitchen this Summer there was already a shortage crisis - food donations, even from the giant organization Food Lifeline, had plummeted.
The food and supermarket industries are heavily subsidized by this government aid - 12% of all sales.
