Six months ago I wrote about how great my new electric bike was. I think we all know that if something seems too good to be true it probably is an illusion, or a projection.
On November 20 I sent this email to Lectric:
I have been very happy with my Lectric 3.0 but unfortunately the screen won’t turn on. I have under 1,000 miles, have taken good care of the bike, it has never been exposed to moisture and the connections are secure. Have looked at troubleshooting advice online and in the manual but still a blank screen.
Any suggestions for fixing this problem?
They responded right away and mailed out a new display, for free, the next day. So far so good!
Unfortunately when I installed the new display the bike still would not work.
I told Lectric this and they responded right away by suggesting I do a multimeter test on the battery. Battery was fine. Bike still would not turn on.
When I relayed this update to Lectric they responded right away and mailed me a new controller right away. This was a pain to install and guess what? Bike still didn’t work.
My neighbor — a bike guy — suggested that the motor probably died.
On December 12 I told Lectric this.
Here is their reply:

Didn’t check this before I bought the bike but the nearest authorized service center is 35 minutes away from Seattle. Oh the irony - I have structured my life to avoid driving on highways.
This place is open Wednesday through Sunday at odd hours. They don’t answer the phone or respond to voicemail so there’s no way to talk to a real human bike tech.
There’s a bike store in Seattle that services Lectric bikes. You don’t need an appointment. The guy I talked to told me that “it’s $160 an hour, and as soon as you come in the clock starts ticking.”
Irritating how much time I have spent trying to solve this problem. If Lectric ends up reimbursing me for the repair or sending me a new bike this story will not be tragic. People have worse problems than having their thousand dollar bike break on them.
